More Than a Headshot

A traditional corporate headshot is designed to create a consistent, professional representation of a person. Environmental portraits and corporate lifestyle photography have a different purpose—they add context.

By photographing people in the places where they lead, work, collaborate and interact with others, the environment becomes part of the story. An office, production floor, laboratory, kitchen or other workplace can communicate something about a person’s role and the organization behind them before a visitor reads a single word.

What Are Environmental Headshots?

Environmental headshots are professional portraits created within a setting that provides context about the person being photographed. Rather than using a traditional studio or uniform background, the workplace, architecture or surrounding environment becomes part of the composition.

For businesses, that context can help communicate a person’s role, expertise and connection to the organization. The goal isn’t simply to create a different background. It’s to use the environment to help tell the person’s story.

Where Environmental Portraits Work Best

Environmental portraits are particularly effective when the location helps communicate something about the person, their role or the organization they represent.

They can be used for executive and leadership profiles, company websites, recruiting, public relations, annual reports, editorial features, speaker biographies and marketing campaigns.

For organizations building a larger corporate image library, environmental portraits can also complement traditional employee headshots by providing more expressive imagery for places where a standard head-and-shoulders portrait doesn’t tell enough of the story.
